What to Do or Not to When Keeping Large Dog Breeds

Dogs have become known as man’s best friend. Their friendliness and ability to cope with different lifestyles makes them best suited for man. Large dogs will be kept by people for purposes such as for pets, for company, for guiding the blind people when they walk and others will be used for security purposes. People keeping small dogs, however, only keep them for the company as pets.

The interest of any large dog owner would be to know how to keep them and what precautions are there to observe. The large dog breeds are a better option compared to the small dogs due to their large size, their long lifespan and also their adaptability to harsh environments. If a dog weighs up to fifty kilograms, you can put it in the category of a large dog. How then do you take care of a large dog?

First of all, you should ensure that more than anything else, you give your dog quality food. Being big, these large breeds need to get large amounts of quality feed. Be specific to calcium and starch levels in the food you give to your dog. The role of calcium in the body is to aid in the formation of bones. You should, however, avoid excess calcium supplements since they may lead to skeletal problems. Energy giving foods should also be given to your dogs to supply required calories. Starch for energy may be sourced from feeds made from wheat are related products.

Check also the management of diseases in your dog. A dog is said to be as happy as it is healthy. The large size of these dogs sometimes is the cause of their diseases. Some of these diseases affecting large dog breeds include entropion, osteoarthritis, gastric problems, hip dysplasia and heart problems. Though the above diseases are expensive to treat, majority of them are preventable. Routine injections are important but make it a habit to also keep taking your dog for checkups. You are required to monitor your dog during times such as mealtime and exercises such as walks. Your company is needed in these times as it is when you notice indicators of dog illnesses which include moods and behavior change.

The last thing you need is to get a qualified person to train your dog. An untrained large dog may be lethal if it turns hostile. Children may be the worst hit victims of a hostile large dog and your trainer should focus on training the dog to live well even with children. The dogs can also be trained to do specific operations such as drug-sniffing, cattle grazing and being guides.
